LAHORE – PCB Chairman Provides Update on Saim Ayub’s Recovery, Prioritizes Long-Term Fitness Over Champions Trophy.
Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has provided an update on Saim Ayub’s recovery, emphasizing a cautious approach to the rehabilitation of the talented opener, who is currently undergoing treatment in the UK.
The 21-year-old batting sensation will miss the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 due to a fractured ankle. Speaking to the media, Naqvi confirmed that the PCB is prioritizing Ayub’s long-term fitness over the short-term gains of including him in the squad for the key tournament. While Ayub’s absence is a blow for Pakistan, the board is committed to ensuring his complete recovery to safeguard his future in international cricket.
“Saim Ayub’s future is important, and we are not willing to risk his career by rushing his return to action,” Naqvi said during a press briefing. He acknowledged the importance of the Champions Trophy but stressed that Ayub’s health and readiness remain the primary concern.
Ayub sustained the ankle injury during a Test match against South Africa in Cape Town. The recovery period required him to be rested for six weeks, ruling him out of crucial fixtures, including Pakistan’s home Test series against the West Indies and the upcoming Tri-Nation Series.
Despite his absence, Ayub’s remarkable performances in ODIs earned him a spot in the ICC Team of the Year 2024, where he was recognized as an opening batter. However, his return to international cricket this year remains uncertain as the PCB evaluates his recovery progress before making any decisions.
Pakistan has yet to announce its squad for the Champions Trophy, a delay partly attributed to Ayub’s injury. Meanwhile, other participating teams have already revealed their selections. While fans eagerly await the squad announcement, the PCB remains firm in its commitment to player welfare and Ayub’s long-term success.
